The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (BCFPD) will host a live burn demonstration to illustrate the effectiveness of home fire sprinkler systems, at a public ceremony designed to draw attention to these life-saving devices.
- WHAT: National Home Fire Sprinkler Day Observance
- WHERE: BCFPD Station 1 (22222 North Pepper Road, Lake Barrington)
- WHEN: Saturday, May 19th, 10:00 – 11:30 am
The 90-minute event, part of a nationwide observance organized by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition, will also recognize the 104 Illinois communities, townships, and districts that have adopted NFPA 13D building codes requiring fire sprinkler systems in new residential construction.
Special recognition will be given to the Long Grove Fire Protection District which, in 1988, was the first governmental entity in Illinois to adopt NFPA 13D standards.
The BCFPD adopted its own fire sprinkler ordinance in 1997.
“The vast majority of fire deaths in the U.S. and Canada occur in the home,” BCFPD Fire Chief James Kreher explained. “From our perspective, that is unacceptable – especially when there’s a solution to the problem. Sprinkler systems save lives and limit property damage. National Home Fire Sprinkler Day is a chance to promote their effectiveness and encourage their use in communities across Illinois and throughout the nation,” he added.
The BCFPD observance will also feature brief remarks by leading Illinois fire safety professionals:
- Dan Riordan, President, Illinois Fire Inspectors Association.
- Mike Mavrogeorge, Illinois Fire Safety Alliance.
- Russ Sanders, NFPA Regional Director.
- Tom Lia, Illinois Fire Sprinkler Coalition.
Fire service leaders will also read a joint resolution to affirm support for home fire sprinkler systems and their effectiveness in preventing fire deaths and reducing property damage/loss.
