The Village of Lake Barrington is saddened by the death last week of Tom Vanderpoel, a long-time leader and member of Citizens for Conservation (CFC).

Lake Barrington Village President Kevin Richardson stated that “Tom leaves a remarkable legacy that will benefit future generations who live in our community. His commitment to conservation, habitat restoration and biodiversity is one of the many reasons that the Village of Lake Barrington is as beautiful, green, and serene as it is today.”

“The Village of Lake Barrington and CFC have worked side-by-side for decades to protect and conserve the open space and natural habitat that so readily defines Lake Barrington as an oasis of gracious countryside living,” Richardson said. “Tom and his family, along with his colleagues at Citizens for Conservation, have earned our deep appreciation for their tireless work over many, many years to acquire, restore, protect, and preserve critical acres within Lake Barrington.”

One of the more significant projects between the Village and CFC began in 2009 and focused on the protection of almost thirty acres of critical habitat located along Flint Creek at the northwest corner of Route 14 and Cuba Road. This property includes mature oak savannahs, flood plains, and flora and fauna that will be restored and saved for the future generations to enjoy. The Village purchased the property – commonly known as the “Gibbs property” – for conservation purposes and signed an agreement with CFC that provided the organization with the right to purchase a portion of the property a piece at a time. In addition, CFC has offered its assistance and expertise to the Village in maintaining and improving the property.

“The conservation and restoration of the ‘Gibbs property’ were made possible because of Tom’s farsighted vision as to what could be accomplished on a collaborative, win-win basis,” Richardson said. “Because of Tom’s leadership, the Village and Citizens for Conservation have been able to permanently protect these environmentally important parcels.”

The entire Lake Barrington Village Board of Trustees, on behalf of all Village residents, sends its condolences and prayers to both the Vanderpoel family and the members and leadership of Citizens for Conservation along with its profound thanks for Tom’s lifetime of commitment of service to the environment and the community.
