The Talk in 60010
June 7, 2018

The final meeting of the Signal Hill, NSDAR, 2017-2018 chapter year took place on May 22, 2018, at the Barrington Area Library.

New officers were inducted into their upcoming terms: Chaplain Kathy Boyle swore in officers for their two-year terms: Holly Cashatt Dietz who will serve at Historian, Lynne Backer, who will serve as Librarian, and Kathi Ortiz, who will serve as Treasurer. Kathy Boyle and Linda Oppy Lyons will also continue to serve another two years in their respective roles as Chaplain and Registrar.

Ruth Groth was able to give our Good Citizen Award Winner, Kara Ingram, her well-deserved recognition, from our February 2018 award. The annual Essay Contest winners for 5th-8th-grade students and the Good Citizen Award designation were announced earlier in the year, but Ms. Ingram wasn’t able to attend to receive her scholarship award of $1000 until the May meeting.

Perfect for our Memorial Day remembrances, Chapter Regent Deborah Edlund set up a table for the "Missing Man", who is remembered at all military meal functions and explained the significance of each item on the table. Reminders for participation in the Barrington Memorial Day Parade and Commemoration were also given to the members present at the meeting.

Lastly, First Vice Regent Ann Wilkerson disclosed the upcoming schedule of programs for the 2018-2019 year, and a “sneak peek” at the upcoming annual English High Tea Fundraiser was disclosed, with October 24th as the designated date, and Annette Baldwin as the historic speaker, whose topic will be about the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

The Signal Hill Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, raises funds throughout the year and distributes to 501 (c) (3) organizations, whose missions support DAR’s mission of education, historic preservation, patriotism, conservation, and Native American issues. The chapter was founded in 1972 and is dedicated to preserving history, promoting patriotism, conservation and historical awareness in our community, and securing America’s future through better education for children. Membership is established through approval of documentation of direct lineage from an American Revolutionary War Patriot.
