March 2, 2018

Barrington Area United Way's annual Power of the Purse rallies women to support initiatives to help other women in the community.

A fun luncheon where guests enjoy mingling with friends, bidding on purse packages, participating in Impact and Wall of Wallets raffles and a tasty lunch culminates with a grant presentation to an organization serving women in need in 60010.

Once everyone was seated for lunch, BAUW President of the Board Deedee Johnson welcomed everyone and introduced the Impact Raffle with help from her daughter Jacey, current Miss Teen Illinois International. Jacey showcased the beautiful necklace generously donated by Long & Co. Jewelers in Barrington. The necklace was won by Pam Conroy of Barrington Hills.

The grant money was raised by women who became Power of the Purse members for $100. This year's grant recipient was Barrington Youth & Family Services (BYFS). Barrington Area United Way Executive Director Leslie Luther presented the grant to Rita Rippentrop, BYFS' Executive Director.

BYFS plans to offer healthy relationship building and violence prevention services that include addressing relational aggression (domestic violence) and sexual assault programs as a community resource. Programming would involve individual therapy, women’s support groups, and prevention presentations or events. The grant money would help fund training for three BYFS staff professionals in domestic violence and sexual assault through the Community Crisis Center in Elgin. Remaining funding would be used to support individual counseling, supports groups and workshops for residents of Barrington 220 without the resources to pay for services.
