This Sunday Help Buckthorn or Bust Bonfire with BACT & LLBean

Barrington Area Conservation Trust
March 2, 2018

Come help the Barrington Area Conservation Trust & LL Bean get rid of this invasive species this Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Far Field Nature Preserve from 10:00 am-12: 00 pm.

Why is it so important to remove this non-native plant?

Did you know buckthorn is an invasive species brought to North America in the mid-1800's? It reproduces aggressively and changes eco-systems by shading out native plants and trees. Buckthorn also damages the soil and affects the surrounding wildlife habitat. Removing buckthorn and other woody invasives will give native plants and trees the chance to thrive.

In an effort to eliminate this invasive woody plant, we are looking for volunteers to join BACT and LLBean for a Buckthorn or Bust Bonfireworkday at our Far Field Nature Preserve. We will be cutting down buckthorn and clearing and burning brush so dress appropriately for the weather and bring water. All participants will earn volunteer hours, and we will provide the tools, snacks and bonfire. Please fill out our liability waiver and photo release form online. We hope to see you there!

For additional information on why buckthorn is so detrimental to our environment, check out this video from our friends at the Shedd Aquarium and this video from our friends at Bluestem Ecological Services.
