BStrong Together hosted Dr. Shimi Kang an award-winning physician, researcher, and author of The Dolphin Way and The Self-Motivated Kid, to Barrington High School on January 30th, 2018.
Dr. Shimi Kang shared her professional and personal experiences with parents and parenting through an interactive presentation and Q & A with the audience. She expressed her concern about the use of technology and it’s effect on the life and social skill development of children. Social media may allow people to communicate and share life’s events more easily, but Dr. Kang shared a University of Michigan report showing the number of 8th, 10th, and 12th Grade students who express feelings of loneliness is at an all-time high.
Dr. Kang also shared her description of three types of parenting and the possible pitfalls certain parents, although well-meaning, may create in their children.
The three parenting style she described were:
Tiger: Authoritarian. This parent tends to over direct and over protect their children. Although they help short-term performance, they create long-term lower achievement and higher levels of anxiety and depression in their children.
Dolphin: Collaborative. This parent expresses empathy with their children and what they are experiencing - but also helps them set their own goals. They instill feelings of optimism allowing them to see that what they hope to achieve is possible.
Jellyfish: Permissive. This parent tends to not set and communicate rules and expectations of their children. The short-term benefit may create confidence, but the long-term effect is most likely directionless children with low internal drive and achievement.
Dr. Kang also stressed the importance of rest and reducing stress. Not just sleep, but downtime away from the constant stimulus and pressure in most of today’s society. She highlighted our human need for play, interaction with others and downtime. Dr. Kang explained how these actions, or inactions, help develop critical skills necessary for success in the 21st Century:
- Critical Thinking
After the presentation, Dr. Kang signed copies of her books and continued to talk with parents and community members.
A lot of what Dr. Shimi Kang shared is what would have been termed ‘common sense’ parenting just a few decades ago, but unfortunately the world today is quite different. Our current world is one of constant and rapid change creating changing social pressures and new challenges for parents. Dr. Kang’s lessons and insights are great tools for parents to navigate their families through current conditions and prepare them to best handle what the future might bring!
