Barrington 220 welcomed Consul General Hong Lei to Barrington Middle School Station Campus, the Early Learning Center, and North Barrington schools. He came to learn more about the B220 Chinese Immersion Program.

Consul General Lei has served as head of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Chicago since 2016. Previously he served as spokesperson and deputy director general for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We joined the tour at North Barrington School where four excited students greeted the Consul General Lei and his entourage. They walked the group through the school pointing out the many areas where Chinese language and learning reside. Starting in the music room, they made a brief stop in the hallway to recognize the Chinese Word of the Week wall.

Onto the library, the excited students showed the guests where books in Chinese could be found.

They made a stop in the 2nd and 3rd-grade classrooms where students shared what they were working on at the moment. Both classrooms performed a song in Chinese to welcome the Consul General and guests.

Barrington 220’s Chinese Immersion Language Program is now in its seventh year. Students are given the opportunity to enroll in kindergarten, then continue every year with instruction in Mandarin for 50% of each day. Students learn Mandarin through content areas besides daily Chinese Language Arts classes. They become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural in Mandarin.
