Blood donations desperately needed!

November 10, 2014

The American Red Cross says it has lost about 33,000 blood and platelet donations because frigid temperatures are keeping potential donors at home.

Supplies of blood are desperately low. This Wednesday, our community, championed by the Barrington Area Development Council, is hosting an all area blood drive at the Barrington Park District. (Get Details Here)

LifeSource, a supplier of donated blood to our area hospitals, including Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, will be administering the donations.

With Valentine’s Day at the end of the week, what better way to show your love to the community?

“Donating blood is one of the easiest ways to give back to others and is also extremely safe,” Dr. Joe Giangrasso, Emergency Medicine at Good Shepherd Hospital says. “The need for blood always exceeds the available supply.”

Many treatments for our neighbors who are ill rely on donated blood:

  • Whole Blood is used in treating severe blood loss. Most of donated blood is separated to help treat specific diseases and medical complications.

  • Red Cells are used to treat all types of anemia – rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, sickle cell diseases and more.

  • Platelets are used in bone marrow failure, post transplants, after chemotherapy treatmenst, leukemia and more.

  • Plasma is used after loss during childbirth, during cardiac surgery, to help liver disease symptoms, help burn victims and more.

Donated blood is used everyday. A quarter of the population in the United States will require donated blood in their lifetime. Paying it forward can help ensure that when the time comes you might have the blood you need.
